Urban foxes are increasingly common in Nottingham, attracted by food waste, unsecured bins, and pet food left outdoors. While foxes are not classified as vermin under UK law, they can cause significant nuisance — digging up gardens, scattering rubbish, killing chickens and rabbits, leaving droppings that carry Toxocara roundworm, and making loud screaming noises at night during mating season (January–February). Local councils do not provide fox control services — you will need a private pest controller or deterrent methods.
Digging in lawns and flower beds, scattered bin bags, strong musky smell, fox droppings in garden (pointed ends, often contain bone/fur/seeds), trampled paths under fences and along boundaries, loud screaming/barking at night.
Toxocara roundworm (in droppings, risk to children), mange (can spread to dogs), livestock kills, garden damage, noise nuisance.
£150–£400 for deterrent installation. Fox-proofing: £200–£500. Ongoing management: £300–£800/year
