Brighton & Sussex Seasonal Pest Calendar: Month-by-Month Guide

Published 27 February 2026

Pest activity across Brighton and Sussex follows predictable seasonal patterns driven by coastal weather, temperature, and breeding cycles. Knowing what to expect each season helps you catch problems early — before a minor nuisance becomes a full infestation requiring professional treatment.

Spring (March – May)

Spring signals the start of increased pest activity across Sussex as temperatures rise and daylight extends.

Ants appear in kitchens and bathrooms from late March, drawn to food residue and moisture. Black garden ants are the most common species across Brighton and Worthing. Seal entry points around doors and window frames, and keep surfaces clean.

Queen wasps emerge from hibernation in April and begin scouting for nesting sites. Loft spaces, garages, sheds, and wall cavities are preferred locations. At this stage nests are golf-ball sized and easy for professionals to treat — far cheaper and simpler than dealing with a full colony later in summer.

Rats and mice breeding accelerates in spring. Properties near Brighton's railway lines, the Lewes riverside, or backs of restaurants along the seafront are at higher risk. Check for fresh droppings, gnaw marks on cables, and gaps in exterior walls. A mouse needs only a 6mm gap — the width of a pencil — to enter your property.

Clothes moths become active in wardrobes and under furniture. If you stored winter woollens without cleaning them first, check for larvae and webbing now.

Summer (June – August)

Summer is peak pest season in Sussex, driven by coastal tourism, warm weather, and maximum insect activity.

Wasps reach peak colony size by August. A mature nest in your loft or garden shed may contain 10,000+ wasps. Never attempt to treat a large nest yourself — disturbed wasps release alarm pheromones that trigger mass stinging. Professional treatment typically costs £50–£90 and resolves the problem within 24 hours.

Seagulls are at their most aggressive from June to August when chicks are on rooftops. Adult herring gulls will dive-bomb pedestrians, steal food, and attack pets near nesting sites. Brighton, Hove, Eastbourne, and Worthing seafronts are particularly affected. Commercial premises should ensure outdoor dining areas are managed and waste bins are sealed. Gull-proofing measures — spikes, netting, and wire systems — should be installed before the nesting season begins in April.

Bed bug reports spike in summer as tourism and student moves increase. Airbnb hosts, hotel operators, and landlords across Brighton should inspect between guest changeovers. Look for small dark spots on mattress seams and a distinctive sweet, musty smell.

Flies increase dramatically near the coast. Cluster flies, bluebottles, and fruit flies are all common in Brighton homes from June onwards. Keep windows screened where possible, clean kitchen waste daily, and ensure drain covers are fitted.

Flea activity peaks in late summer, particularly in homes with pets. Central-heated carpeted houses provide ideal conditions year-round, but summer warmth accelerates the breeding cycle. Treat pets regularly and vacuum thoroughly before any professional treatment.

Autumn (September – November)

Autumn is when pests begin moving indoors as temperatures drop, making prevention critical before winter.

Mice and rats seek shelter from October onwards. This is the single most important time to rodent-proof your property. Walk the exterior and seal every gap larger than 6mm around pipes, cables, vents, and doorframes. Pay special attention to older properties in Kemptown, Hanover, Seven Dials, and the Lewes conservation area where aging brickwork creates entry points.

Spiders enter homes in September and October during mating season. While house spiders are harmless, their sudden appearance can be distressing. They enter through open windows, air vents, and gaps under doors. Keeping exterior lights off at night reduces the insects that attract them.

Cluster flies gather in large numbers in loft spaces and upper rooms of houses across the South Downs and rural Wealden areas. They hibernate over winter in the thousands and while not harmful, their presence is unpleasant. Professional treatment before they settle in autumn is the most effective approach.

Squirrel activity increases as grey squirrels look for winter shelter. Properties near Preston Park, Stanmer Park, Worthing's parks, or any woodland edge in Mid Sussex and Wealden should check loft spaces for entry points. Squirrels can cause serious damage to roof timbers, electrical wiring, and water tanks.

Winter (December – February)

Winter is quieter for insect pests but critical for rodent management.

Rats and mice are most likely to be noticed between November and February when they are fully established indoors. Scratching sounds in walls, ceilings, or under floorboards — particularly at night — indicate activity. Droppings near food sources, behind kitchen units, and in loft insulation confirm their presence. Do not delay calling a professional — a pair of mice can produce 60+ offspring per year.

Cockroaches thrive in heated indoor environments year-round. Brighton's restaurant sector, takeaways along London Road, and commercial kitchens should maintain rigorous monitoring through winter. Oriental cockroaches are the most common species in Sussex, favouring damp basements and drain access points.

Overwintering pests like cluster flies and ladybirds may emerge on warm winter days, causing confusion. They have not infested your property — they are simply using your loft or window frames for hibernation and will leave in spring.

Bird proofing work is best scheduled in winter before the spring nesting season begins. This is the ideal time to install gull deterrents, pigeon spikes, and netting on commercial and residential buildings across coastal Sussex.
